Born in Erlbach, Saxony, he studied at the Academy of Arts in Berlin and Dresden before completing his education at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Graubner's work is characterized by his "Farbraumkörper" (color space bodies), where he layered pigments on padded surfaces to create a sense of depth and luminosity. Throughout his career, he held professorships at the Academy of Fine Arts in Hamburg and the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. His contributions to contemporary art were recognized with participation in major exhibitions such as documenta 4 and 6, and representing Germany at the Venice Biennale in 1982
