Günther Förg

Günther Förg (1952-2013, Germany) was a German painter, photographer, and sculptor whose practice was driven by a lifelong critical engagement with modernism. Though he worked across many media — lead paintings, large-format architectural photography, bronze sculpture, and wall paintings — he always returned to painting as his core discipline. His Gitterbilder (grid paintings) are among his most celebrated works. Painted with a loose, gestural hand in vivid, layered colour, they feature intersecting lines and hatching that create a sense of vibrant visual energy. Despite their geometric structure, they are anything but rigid — the brushwork is free and expressive, drawing frequent comparisons to Cy Twombly. In these works, Förg managed to reconcile formal rigour with spontaneous gesture, making them a kind of synthesis of everything his practice stood for.
